On 19th April 2017, the Faculty of Education invited Professor Jean Charles Chabanne of Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon to conduct an academic lecture on “Art(s), Language(s), Education(s), Literacy(ies): ‘Talking about’ Art Experience as an Art, as an Art for Learners and as an art for Educators.” More than 40 teachers and students from different majors in the Faculty of Education attended the lecture. The lecture was hosted by Yang Fuyi, the director of the International Affairs Division.

Professor Chabanne’s research field is very extensive, involving language education, art education, literature education and so on. He particularly pays much attention on the idea of taking “language” as the tool of thinking, learning and teaching and the close relation with other disciplines. In addition, he is also good at teaching design, teacher education and so on. Professor Chabanne used interesting stories and pictures as teaching tools and introduced the “language game” and its symbolic interaction. Through the comparison between the basic skills and needs of the 21-century national curriculum in different countries and the “language game,” he described the importance of using symbolic interaction to cultivate the students’ creativity, social communication ability and other literacies. Professor Chabanne’s extensive academic vision and the intersectionality, practicality and applicability of his research have aroused great interest of the present teachers and students. The atmosphere at the scene was lively, the interaction was warm and everyone gained a lot.

After the lecture, the Faculty of Education held a seminar on the promotion of Sino-French JoRISS Project in Room 401 in the Arts Building. Professor Chabanne of ENS Lyon, Bai Yun, the director of the Teaching Affairs Division of the Faculty of Education, Yang Fuyi and some teachers from the Faculty of Education who were interested in the JoRRIS Project attended the seminar. At first, professor Chabanne introduced his research interests and research areas. Then, the teacher representatives wanting to participate in this project had an in-depth communication with Professor Chabanne. They introduced their own research direction and major and expressed the intention to have further communication and in-depth cooperation.

At last, all the participants reached an agreement. They hoped to explore the form of holding workshops or seminars between China and French by starting from sharing research materials and further promote the collaboration on the JoRRIS Project.
