Academic exchange by Prof. Douglas D. Perkins: Community Research and Actions – A Trans-disciplinary Framework

On May 10th, 2017, Prof. Douglas D. Perkins, a community psychologist from Peabody College of Education and Human Development, Vanderbilt University and the Director of the doctoral program on community research and actions, was invited by the Institute of Vocational and Adult Education to give a lecture titled “Community research and actions – a trans-disciplinary framework”. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Weiping Shi, Director of Institute of Vocational Education and Adult Education. A number of faculty members and graduate students from the Institute of Vocational and Adult Education participated in the lecture.

Starting the lecture with the connotations of community and community psychology, Dr. Perkins specifically introduced the basic principles, research topics, research methods and professional competence required in the practice of community psychology. Then he discussed the 140-year development of applied social science in the United States and the contributions from Ecology, Psychology, Sociology, Pedagogy and other fields to community research and actions. Finally, Prof. Perkins briefly introduced the development of community psychology around the world and extended his expectation on the further development of community psychology in China.

Following the completion of the lecture, Prof. Shi briefly summed up the contents of the lecture and expressed respect and gratitude to Prof. Perkins with a souvenir. Then, participants conducted discussions on the integration of multiple disciplines and the prospect of community psychology.

This exchange visit broadened the horizons of students and stimulated them to ponder over community psychology and community education. After the lecture, gratitude was extended to Prof. Perkins with warm applause.
