Research Interests and Experiences

Dr. Jie Zheng is an invited peer reviewer of the Journal of International Students from February 2018 to February 2021. She used to work with Dr. George Zhou at the University of Windsor, analyzing data collected from qualitative interviews with school teachers in Ontario and writing key findings report for his Social Sciences Humanities Research Council (SSHRC, Canada) project of Chinese immigrant parents’ involvement in school education. She also participated in Dr. Sarah Kennedy’s research project on teaching English as a foreign language, completing reliability check of her qualitative data, Concordia University; she was associate editor of the International Journal of the Humanities; and she worked with Dr. Jennifer Kelly on her SSHRC funded 3-year research project of Racialization, Immigration and Citizenship: 1900-1960s as a research assistant in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, University of Alberta.

Doctoral dissertation research:

Driven by a long-standing interest in the sociology of education especially with regard to how globalization has affected education systems worldwide, Jie investigates China’s state policies on internationalization of higher education (IHE) from 1949 to 2012 and IHE reality at a national key university, a member of “Project 211” in China in her doctoral dissertation research. She aims to explore the role of state policies on higher education in influencing IHE in China from a social, historical, and cultural aspect, examine the rationale for IHE at the national and institutional level, and discuss implications of IHE in a Chinese context.

Current research interests:

A historical, cultural, and social study of higher education policies in the main OECD countries and China, comparing and looking for implications for improving educational practice;

School-based research, with a focus on critical thinking and critical pedagogy;

Youth, culture, identity, and education, investigating the role of school teachers, textbooks, and global media culture that play in the formation of moral/value orientation of youth in China.
