Professor Bill McDiarmid is currently the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Education at the School of Education (SOE), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), having served as Dean of the SOE from 2009-2016. Previously, he held the Boeing Chair in Teacher Education at the University of Washington.

As Dean, Professor McDiarmid led several major initiatives, among them: creating an undergraduate Education minor, master’s degrees in International Education and in Educational Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship, and a field-based Master of Teaching; a partnership with low wealth rural school districts; and significantly increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of the SOE faculty.

Professor McDiarmid is the author of more than 75 articles and research monographs, eight chapters in edited volumes, and four books. His most recent book is Lessons from the Teachers for a New Era project: Evidence and Accoutablility in Teacher Education published by Routledge: He received an Outstanding Research Award from the American Educational Research Association in 1995. He is also a founding member of the Deans for Impact organization and a Trustee of Athens College, Athens, Greece. Currently, he is cooperating with us in various research projects as a visiting professor.
