On November 19-20, Professor Huang Futao of the Research and Development Center for Higher Education of Hiroshima University was invited to the Institute of Higher Education Research of the Faculty of Education for a short visit. On the morning of Nov. 20, the professor gave a lecture named “Comparison of Academic Profession in Asia—based on the results of the international questionnaire survey” in classroom 103 of Wenfu Building. Yan Guangcai, director of the Institute, presided the lecture with more than 40 teachers and students attending.

From an international perspective, Professor Huang compared the similarities and differences of career development among university teachers in Kampuchea, China, Malaysia and other Asian countries against the background of constant development of higher education and academic profession in Asia. Through the questionnaire survey and data analysis of university teachers’ self-growth and related teaching and social affairs, the research summed up multiple challenges faced by university teachers from Asian countries and regions. With a detailed investigation and analysis, he pointed out that university teachers from major Asian countries and regions reacted passively to foreign influence to a large degree. The internationalization level of teachers’ research activities remained relatively low, to which should be paid close attention in the development of higher education. Furthermore, he raised questions which called for further study, such as ” Is the unique Asian identity/characteristics necessary for an Asian university teacher?”

Director Yan Guangcai hoped that the Institute of Higher Education Research would maintain close academic ties with Professor Huang and jointly promote the research of issues related to academic profession in the field of higher education.
