On May 24, 2016, Professor Roy E. Larsen and Robert L. Selman from Education and Human Development of Harvard University, Dr. Xu Zhao from the University of Calgary (University of Calgary, Canada) visited the Faculty of Education, held academic lectures and shared academic opinions. The lecture was chaired by Professor Zhou Jing, Yang Fuyi, Director of International Affairs Division of the Faculty of Education, while over 50 faculty members and students attended the lecture.

Researcher Xu Zhao ‘s report was entitled as “Competition and Compassion in Chinese Secondary Education.” Based on the influence of human development and economic, social and educational policy changes on human psychology, it is necessary to review the impact of educational reform on the competition mechanism and competition consciousness, and mental health and development of adolescents. Today’s educational reform attempts to reduce school gap and competition between schools and students, and ask questions “how should future educators perform? How to intervene?”

According to the question raised by Xu Zhao, “What should the educators do? How to intervene?”, Professor Robert L. Selman shared his views entitled by “Children’s Literature as Prevention of Stress and Promotion of Wellness: The case of ‘Crow Boy’.” Professor Robert L. Selman proposed that prevention science is one of the most important theoretical bases that can be implemented in three levels (1) Universal prevention: 80% of students use this intervention to improve language skills; (2) Early intervention: 15% of students use these interventions to provide academic, emotional support and correction services to students with early symptoms; (3) Intensive intervention: 5% of students use this intervention to provide comprehensive, cross-sectoral, family-centered, ongoing interventions and help for students with serious psychological problems.

The lectures of the two experts attracted the broad interest and resonance of the teachers and students.
