STEM Education Forum of The 31st National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition is held at ECNU

“What is the secret of the Iron Man?” What is the secret of a student having excellent academic performance?” What are internal relations for these problems and youth science and technological innovation?

In the afternoon of August 15th, after the establishment ceremony of “Youth Science and Technology Innovation Education Resource Network”, STEM Education Forum of the 31st National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition was organized by Faculty of Education at Minhang campus. Professor Zhong Yang, whose titles are Dean of Graduate School of Fudan University, as well as President Assistant of Tibet University; and Ministry of Education Changjiang Scholar, Liu Wei, Senior Engineer and General Manager of Science and Technology products of the National Local Joint Engineering Research Center, Xue Yaofeng, deputy director and associate researcher from the Department of Education Information Technology, and Shanghai Digital Education Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center, Professor Deng Yiping, from the School of psychology and cognitive science of ECNU, the four speakers showed their research results and educational philosophy on STEM education from different perspectives.. More than 200 technical counselors who participated in the 31st Foundation Creative Competition and representatives of outstanding science and technology educators from all over the country attended the forum.

Li Zhengtao introduced that STEM education is an interdisciplinary integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The United States and other developed countries, have clearly strengthened STEM education as a national human capital strategy measure. China aims to be developed into a powerful human resources nation, cultivate more innovative scientific and technological personnel, so in order to accomplish these goals, China must strengthen the STEM education available. Over the years, East China Normal University has been committed to STEM education and research, and top-notch talent training, while cultivating and transporting a large number of high-quality professional teachers and professional communication for Shanghai as well as other parts of China. To a certain extent, ECNU has formed the “Shanghai experience” and “East China Normal University experience” on STEM Education. These rich and unique experiences have been effectively promoted to cultivate and enhance contemporary youth science and technology innovation and ability.

Followed by the presentation of the three keynote speeches, each with brilliant features, the members of the audience were deeply attracted and moved.

5000 km is the length of 318 national highway, connecting Shanghai and Tibet, it is a long road across China, but also witnessed by and is very much the story of an educator. Professor Zhongyang is the sixth, seventh and eighth batch cadres sent to aid Tibet by the Organization Department of the Central Committee. He made a speech with the theme of “westward, westward 5000 km.” In his speech, based on his own research field, he shared his stories about 15 years’ research and education in Tibet, and showed an outstanding scientist’s deep concern on life and education in the process of scientific research and innovation..

General Manager Liu Wei and associate researcher Xue Yaofeng, started the speech with the concepts of STEAM education and Marker Education, taking children’s familiar figure Iron Man for example, they showed the development of STEAM education process, and their collaborative scientific and rigorous exploration in the integration of STEAM education and Maker Education.

How to become a top-notch student? How to keep top-notch? This is perhaps the secret that all students and parents want to know. Professor Deng Zhiping, from the Department of psychology and cognitive science of ECNU, conducted a follow-up survey. After repeated comparative analysis, Deng Zhiping pointed out that personal performance ability orientation, self-efficacy, learning efficacy, academic self-hindrance, suspicion of academic value, learning time and environmental management, self-regulated learning, learning materials organization and integration, parent-child relationship quality and other factors are the key predictors that determine whether a student can be the top-of-the-line and keep long-lasting. The findings provide a guide for educational practice, such as how to select innovative top-notch students, who have more sustainable development potential, how to organize the implementation of a rich educational model, how to implement appropriate student development guidance, and from which aspects can improve innovation top students training environment and other issues, thus bringing a lot of inspiration for the education practitioners.
