Message From The Dean

We feel honored to have this opportunity to introduce the Faculty of Education of East China Normal University (ECNU) to you.

The Faculty of Education of ECNU is located in the beautiful metropolitan city–Shanghai, China. Education has been an integral part of ECNU’s intellectual heritage since it was founded in 1951. Educational research has been a long-standing commitment of our university. With an open mind and a serious concern about educational practice, ECNU has been well known as a “Shanghai-style University.”

Within ECNU’s history of nearly 70 years, education as a discipline has undergone full development. With diverse undergraduate and graduate programs, a growing body of faculty and students, and productive basic and applied research projects, ECNU has been a leader in China’s educational research. As a bridge between education in China and the globe, ECNU has maintained the tradition of supporting and facilitating international collaborations and substantially contributed to the development of Chinese education as well as the development of education as an discipline.

On October 16, 2014, ECNU integrated all institutional branches of educational research and training and formed the Faculty of Education. While maintaining our traditions in educational research and expertise, we are committed to participating in global dialogues, embracing information technology, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, with a mission to develop educational research in China, enhance education quality, and share Chinese experience with the world. Today, our research focuses primarily on four dimensions: learning sciences with an emphasis on deep learning, core-competence-focused curriculum development, Chinese practice and experience on school reform, equity- and innovation-oriented education policy studies.

This booklet contains further information about us, which would give you a complete overview of the Faculty of Education. I would like to thank you for reading it. As a Chinese poem goes: “The window opened, we face field and ground; Wine cup in hand, we talk of crops of grain.” Welcome to Shanghai.
