Summit Forum of “The Brain Science and Educational Innovation” Held at ECNU

On May 12, the “Brain Science and Education Innovation” large-scale public welfare forum was held at Zhongbei Campus in East China Normal University. More than 1,000 experts and scholars at home and abroad gathered to discuss the application and development of brain science knowledge and technology in the field of education. The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Ren Youqun, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and vice president of ECNU.

The forum was jointly organized by East China Normal University, the China Education 30-people Forum, and the American Minerva Schools at KGI. A video session was set up besides the main session, and more than 40,000 people watched the live broadcast online.

Keynote speech on “Brain Science and Learning” by Dong Qi,

president of Beijing Normal University

and director of the National Brain Science and Cognitive Science Innovation Leading Base.

Dong Qi, president of Beijing Normal University and director of the National Brain Science and Cognitive Science Innovation Leading Base, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Brain Science and Learning”, which consisted of four parts.

Vicki Chandler, a member of the National Science Council (NSB), an academician of the National Academy of Sciences, a geneticist, the academic president of Minerva Schools at KGI, and the Ddean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, made the keynote speech “Minerva Method: Consciously Applying the Principles of Learning Science”. She introduced the teaching model of Minerva Schools in terms of teaching contents and teaching methods.

In response to the inspiration for education innovation of “The Brain Connection Theory'”, Qian Zhuo, director of the Institute of Brain Research at Georgia Medical University, dean of the Well-known Scientists Institute of Georgia Foundation, and professor of the Changjing Speech of the Department of Education of East China Normal University, introduced his recent findings in the deciphering brain’s operating mechanism.

In the afternoon, the forum focused on the topics of “Brain Science and New Educational Technology” and “Social Brain and Citizen Education”. The forum was presided over by Shi Lan, executive secretary of the China Education 30-people Forum.

Speech by Professor Feng Guoping on

“Whether New Subversive Technology Can Fundamentally Improve Human’s Cognitive Ability”

Professor Poitras of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and part-time specially-invited Professor Feng Guoping from the East China Normal University (introduced by the National Thousand Talents Program), addressed the theme of “Whether New Subversive Technology Can Fundamentally Improve Human’s Cognitive Ability”.  

Stephen Kosslyn, dean of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cognitive Neuroscientist, founding president of Minerva Schools at KGI, and former director of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Harvard University highlighted in his speech, “Visual Learning: Establishing and Using ‘Extracting Clue'”, that visual learning that can be applied to any learning forms.

Speech on “Thinking About the Prospects Of Brain Science” by Yang Xiongli, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries.

Yang Xiongli, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries, first briefly introduced the complexity of the human brain in his speech, “Thinking About the Prospects Of Brain Science”, and then mentioned two important issues in the outlook of the brain science: How are the activities of large groups of neurons dynamically combined, coded, processed, and ultimately implemented? How does the neural activity function and sublimate into the mind, which means the advanced complex function such as the brain’s perception, thinking, consciousness and so on?


Speech on “The Brain Foundation of Educational Law”

Yuan Zhenguo, dean of the Faculty of Education at ECNU, first put forward in his speech, titled “The Brain Foundation of Educational Law”, that human development is a process of constantly constructing the brain. Education serves an important role in shaping the students’ brains. Therefore, the development of the brain is the largest and most fundamental part of education.
